During a recent press conference at a CVS Pharmacy in Macon, Georgia, Division Vice President of CVS Pharmacy Brian Bosnic, Attorney General Chris Carr and State Senator John F. Kennedy announced plans to create drug-disposal collection points at 24 CVS Pharmacy stores in Georgia, and emphasized the importance of safely disposing unused or unwanted prescription medication in an effort to combat the opioid crisis.
“CVS Health is dedicated to addressing and preventing opioid abuse in the communities we serve here in Georgia and across the country,” Brian Bosnic said. “Expanding CVS Pharmacy’s in-store safe medication disposal program is one of the many initiatives we support to fulfill that commitment and our purpose of helping people on their path to better health.”
CVS Health recently announced a comprehensive, enterprise-wide approach to help fight the opioid abuse epidemic with even more tools to fight the growing opioid abuse epidemic. We created the Medication Disposal for Safer Communities program to prevent medications from being diverted from those with a legitimate prescription. Over the past two years, CVS Health has worked to expand access to naloxone, a lifesaving drug that blocks opioid receptor sites to reverse the effects of an overdose, without individual prescriptions in 47 states.
“We have to continue to forge innovative partnerships to strengthen our response to the opioid crisis, and CVS Health’s new initiative in Georgia is a great example of that type of collaboration,” Attorney General Carr said. “They want to make it easier than ever before to safely dispose of any unused, expired prescription drugs, getting them out of the hands of those who might otherwise abuse them.”
