Company embarks on major expansion of Registered Apprenticeship program to include new markets and new fields

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of CVS Health's (NYSE: CVS) commitment to workforce and community development, the company is expanding its Registered Apprenticeship program to several new markets, as well as new fields and concentrations. Registered Apprenticeships provide participants with structured training to maintain the high level of skill needed in complex fields, such as pharmacy care, and equips participants with a nationally recognized portable credential that will help them advance their career.

"At CVS Health, we know the value of investing in the communities we serve, particularly in workforce development," said David Casey, Vice President, Workforce Strategies, and Chief Diversity Officer. "Through programs such as Registered Apprenticeships, we are not only helping to equip community members and potential job candidates with the tools they need to succeed in their careers, we are also ensuring that our company has a strong pipeline of talented colleagues."

CVS Health was the first employer to launch a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program for pharmacy technicians in 2005. Since then, CVS Health has placed more than 1,500 colleagues in Registered Apprenticeship career tracks in retail pharmacy and management and has committed to doubling that number over the next five years.

"National Apprenticeship Week provides business, education, and community leaders as well as students and workers with the unique chance to elevate and expand the conversation around the positive impact of apprenticeships in America," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. "For decades, the skilled trades have led the way in developing and refining American apprenticeships. Today, forward thinking companies like CVS Health are using that same 'earn while you learn' foundation and applying it in never before seen ways to expand opportunities for working people in America."

To deliver on the company's commitment to double its number of apprentices, CVS Health has developed partnerships with several organizations across the country, including the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services, Houston Community College, the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board, Inc. and State of Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, and the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, to create new Registered Apprenticeship programs and expand existing programs. With the assistance of U.S. Department of Labor American Apprenticeship Grants, CVS Health and its partners will be:

  • Increasing existing Registered Apprenticeship opportunities for Pharmacy Technicians in Michigan.
  • Expanding Registered Apprenticeship opportunities for Pharmacy Technicians to Arkansas, Missouri, Rhode Island, Texas and Wisconsin.
  • Expanding Registered Apprenticeship opportunities for Retail Store Managers in Rhode Island.
  • Developing new Registered Apprenticeship programs for Pharmacy Technicians in specialty pharmacy services in Michigan and Wisconsin.
  • Developing a new Registered Apprenticeship program for Pharmacy Technicians in the company's CVS/caremark Call Center in Dallas, TX.

As CVS Health continues to develop and expand its Registered Apprenticeship program, the company will explore how it can offer apprenticeship opportunities in additional fields, including logistics and digital as well.

"Meaningful work and a defined career track can provide a source of dignity, pride and identity," add Casey. "We're proud to be able to offer participants both through Registered Apprenticeship."

Eight mock pharmacies will help train individuals for employment at CVS Pharmacy stores across the country

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Nov. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS Health [NYSE: CVS] today announced a collaboration with the National Consortium of State-Operated Comprehensive Rehabilitation Centers (NCSOCRC) to help Americans with disabilities find meaningful employment at CVS Pharmacy locations across the country. The announcement coincides with the opening of a mock pharmacy at the Arkansas Career Training Institute (ACTI) in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The new mock pharmacy at ACTI is one of eight locations the company will open by spring 2018, and the result of the collaboration with NCSOCRC. In addition to two locations which previously opened in Fishersville, Va. and Johnstown, Pa., CVS Health plans to support mock pharmacy training facilities in Baltimore, Md., Plainwell, Mich., Smyrna, Tenn., Warm Springs, Ga., and Thelma, Ky.

Through the mock CVS Pharmacy locations, individuals with disabilities receive classroom and hands-on training in life and job skills such as providing customer service, stocking shelves and working at the cash register. Each center is installed with mock equipment and participants work closely with trained staff to learn about the roles and responsibilities of front store and pharmacy technician positions. Individuals who complete the program qualify to apply for a position at CVS Pharmacy.

The first mock pharmacy location of this kind opened at the Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville, Va. in April 2016. Since its opening, 41 participants have completed the program and 11 have been hired for employment with CVS Pharmacy.

Kaylee Merrick, a 2016 graduate of the program, now works for CVS Pharmacy in Northern Virginia. When asked about her job, she said, " (CVS) has open arms to anyone and they have a lot of patience. It's always a joy to see (my regular customers) and interact with them, it's been amazing!"

"CVS Health is focused on breaking down the employment barriers that individuals with disabilities face, which these facilities help to achieve," said David Casey, Vice President, Workforce Strategies and Chief Diversity Officer, CVS Health. "We are proud to be working with the NCSOCRC to help people with disabilities access the security and prosperity that stable jobs can provide."

"Our consortium is charged with providing people with disabilities with opportunities for competitive employment within multiple sectors of the Nation's workforce," said Jonathan Bibb, President of NCSOCRC and Director of ACTI. "Working with CVS Health provides the people we serve with direct access to great careers in health care, along with the support of business leaders with proven records of innovation and inclusion. This is the new definition of business engagement."

CVS Health Commits to Hiring 5,000 New Apprentices by 2022, Expands States Participating in the Program

Top of the article
11.14.17

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Nov. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In an ongoing commitment to workforce development, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced it has set a goal of hiring 5,000 new apprentices by 2022. The newly established goal, which coincides with the U.S. Department of Labor's National Apprenticeship Week, reflects an expansion of the company's Registered Apprenticeship program to seven additional states, including Arizona, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, bringing the total number of statewide apprenticeship programs supported by CVS Health to 18.

Registered Apprenticeships provide participants with structured training to maintain the high level of skills needed in complex fields such as pharmacy care and prescription benefit management, and equips participants with a nationally recognized credential that will help them advance in their careers.

"Apprenticeships help job creators fill open positions with skilled job seekers," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta. "CVS Health's goal to hire thousands more apprentices reflects the strength of the apprenticeship model. The Administration is pleased to see the creation of more opportunities for Americans to learn the skills they need to find family-sustaining jobs."

CVS Health became the first employer to launch a U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship program for pharmacy technicians in 2005. Through 2017, the company has had more than 4,700 colleagues join its Registered Apprenticeship career tracks for retail pharmacy, prescription benefit management and retail store management.

CVS Health is among a growing number of U.S. companies investing in earn-and-learn apprenticeship programs, due in part to the nation's skills gap. Today, there are more than 6 million vacant jobs that American workers are unable to fill the highest level on record, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS also reported in 2015 that the country is projected to produce one million fewer technical workers than is needed over the next decade.

"The widening skills gap in the U.S. is a significant business concern, and companies large and small are seeing this workplace strategy that combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction as a viable solution to build a pipeline of future skilled talent," said Lisa Bisaccia, EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer for CVS Health.

As part of its apprenticeship strategy, CVS Health works with community organizations across the country to source a consistent pipeline of apprentices including federal, state and local government organizations, public workforce agencies, community colleges, community-based nonprofits and faith-based organizations to provide candidate referrals from untapped pools of talent.

"Meaningful work and a defined career track can provide a source of dignity, pride and identity, which participants are able to gain through our Registered Apprenticeship programs," added Bisaccia.

The U.S. Department of Labor has designated November 13 - 19, 2017 as the third annual National Apprenticeship Week, a nationwide opportunity for companies, trade and industry groups, nonprofit organizations, unions, labor-management organizations, and educational institutions to highlight how apprenticeships prepare American workers for the jobs of today and the future.

CVS Health Opens New Retail Distribution Center in Kansas City, MO

Top of the article
08.24.18

New facility will create hundreds of local jobs across the region

KANSAS CITY, Mo. and WOONSOCKET, R.I., Aug. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today officially announced the opening of a new retail distribution center in Kansas City, MO, located at 10711 North Congress Avenue in the Skyport Industrial Park. When fully operational, the new distribution center will add more than 360 new jobs to the Kansas City area, as well as an additional 70 to 100 jobs through work with local businesses.

To mark the occasion, CVS Health held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the distribution center today with Governor Mike Parson, Kansas City Councilman Dan Fowler and Platte County Presiding Commissioner Rob Schieber. The event provided an opportunity for area partners to celebrate the opening and commemorate the collaborative support among state and local agencies throughout the planning and development process for the new facility.

"CVS Health is creating 360 good paying jobs; jobs that will support area families," Governor Mike Parson said. "That's a good story in and of itself, but on top of that, this facility will ship products to 500 CVS Pharmacy locations all over the Midwest. It all starts here. It starts with CVS Health and the partnerships that made this project possible. That's something that CVS Health, all of Kansas City and all of Missouri can be proud of."

"As North America's logistics center, Missouri knows logistics and distribution, and can get products to the global market quickly and efficiently," Steve Johnson, CEO of Missouri Partnership, said. "We are North America's multimodal crossroads, and we are thrilled to celebrate with CVS as they cut the ribbon on their new facility. It was great to be a part of the team that supported their expansion, and we look forward to their continued growth and investment in Missouri."

CVS Health selected Kansas City for the location of the new distribution center because of Missouri's high-quality workforce and centralized geography. The 762,000 sq. ft. distribution center will support the service and fulfillment needs of more than 500 CVS Pharmacy locations throughout the Midwest by reducing the driving distance for these deliveries and, as a result, will significantly reduce carbon emissions and help improve highway safety.

"We are proud to create new jobs and contribute to the economic growth and development of the greater Kansas City, Missouri area. We appreciate the leadership of Governor Parson and all of the state and local officials here who worked with us to make this project a success," said Thomas Moriarty, Chief Policy and External Affairs Officer, CVS Health. "As our business continues to grow, this new facility is a critical part of our infrastructure to ensure we can best serve our customers throughout the Midwest region and beyond."

"The Platte County Economic Development Council is pleased to welcome CVS Health and to celebrate their investment and job creation," said Alicia Stephens, Executive Director of the Platte County EDC. "The KCI Corridor continues to attract quality businesses and we look forward to working with the company as they grow in Platte County. CVS Health's decision to locate to the KCI Corridor affirms Platte County's position as a leader in the logistics sector due to our transportation accessibility and quality workforce."

The new distribution center is expected to begin shipping orders to Midwest CVS Pharmacy locations on October 1, 2018, and adds to CVS Pharmacy's network of 18 distribution centers nationwide.

"The KC region is regularly proving its value as a regional hub for distribution, eCommerce and fulfillment operations," said Tim Cowden, president and CEO, Kansas City Area Development Council. "We are honored to add CVS to the list of companies that are finding KC is an ideal location for reaching customers more efficiently than almost anywhere else in the U.S."
