CVS Health Kicks Off Free Health Screenings in Sacramento as Part of Its Commitment to Building Healthier Communities

32 Project Health events will help address access, affordability and quality care

Company also presented $75,000 grant to Sacramento Native American Health Center to expand opioid treatment options locally

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 2, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of a continuing commitment to building healthier communities, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) celebrated today the expansion of its annual Project Health free health screening campaign to Sacramento with a fun-filled community event at CVS Pharmacy, 1587 W El Camino Avenue, in Sacramento. Today's event is one of 32 free health screenings that will take place in the Sacramento area between now and June 30.

The event also included the presentation of a $75,000 grant from the CVS Health Foundation to the Sacramento Native American Health Center to help expand opioid treatment options locally. The funds will be used to help engage more patients with internal treatment options like medication-assisted treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-focused CBT and integrative or holistic therapies, which have shown to provide greater success in abstinence from substances.

"CVS Health is committed to expanding access to quality and affordable care, both through our retail footprint and with national and local non-profits and organizations who share our belief that better health starts at the community level," said Garth Graham, vice president of Community Health and Impact, CVS Health. "We are thrilled to be here today in Sacramento celebrating the expansion of Project Health, and look forward to providing local residents with free health screenings over the next two months, as part of our commitment to building healthier communities."

Project Health events, which will be held on Thursday Sunday in rotating stores across Sacramento through June, are open to everyone and do not require an appointment. Project Health offers an array of free comprehensive health assessment screenings, including blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), glucose and total cholesterol screenings, which can help detect risk for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

The expansion of Project Health will also do more to screen for social determinants of health that affect personal health and communities. About 60 percent of life expectancy is driven by behavioral, social and environmental factors including family, education, housing, and access to fresh food. Project Health events have a proven track record of improving patient engagement and ultimately, healthier outcomes.

Once screened, patients have access to on-site consultations with bilingual nurse practitioners or physician assistants who will analyze results and refer patients who require additional medical care and follow up to no-cost or low-cost medical facilities nearby or to their primary care physician.

Sacramento is one of five cities in California where a total of 256 Project Health screenings will take place this year through December. Events are occurring year-round in Los Angeles, and took place earlier this year in Fresno and San Francisco. Project Health will begin in the San Diego area in July.

Since it was established in 2006, Project Health has delivered more than $127 million in free health care services to nearly 1.7 million people in multicultural communities with a large number of uninsured or underinsured Americans.

CVS Health Expanding Free Wellness Screenings in Houston

Project Health events to be held now through April 28 in select CVS Pharmacy locations

Campaign has delivered $30 million worth of free health services to underserved communities in Texas locally since 2006

HOUSTON, April 2, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its commitment to building healthier communities across the country, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced it is adding more free health and wellness screenings at select CVS Pharmacy locations across the greater Houston area through April 28, as part of its annual Project Health campaign.

CVS Health launched Project Health in the Houston suburb of Spring, Texas at the company's new HealthHUB location, a store concept which combines the best of today's CVS Pharmacy with the future of accessible, low-cost health services and more trusted advice.

"Better health starts at the community level, and Project Health delivers affordable and convenient access to free services that help identify health concerns and risk factors for our neighbors who may not have otherwise sought preventative care," said Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., M.P.H., Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. "Chronic conditions, which can often be life-threatening, can be treated very effectively when identified early at screenings such as Project Health, and can help to improve a patient's overall health and well-being."

Project Health, which provides access to care in multicultural communities with a large number of uninsured or underinsured Americans, offers an array of free comprehensive health assessment screenings, including blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), glucose and total cholesterol screenings, which can help detect risk for chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Since it was founded in 2006, Project Health has delivered more than $127 million in free health care services to nearly 1.7 million Americans, with more than $27 million in support of Texas communities. More than 87 percent of patients who attend Project Health events report following-up with their primary care physician and were significantly more likely to proactively discuss their blood pressure, BMI and blood sugar levels, according to the company's own metrics. Additionally, 95 percent of participants said they would recommend Project Health to a family member or friend.

A total of 31 events will take place on Thursday Sunday in rotating stores across Houston through April 28, and are open to everyone and do not require an appointment. For a full calendar of events, please visit www.cvs.com/projecthealth.

"As a front door to health care, we are proud to offer Project Health in more CVS Pharmacy locations across Houston this spring," said Jeffrey Schmidt, Divisional Vice President, CVS Health. "The free health screenings are a simple way for people to access much-needed health services in their community, and are just one more way we are delivering on our company's purpose of helping people on their path to better health."

Once screened, patients have access to on-site consultations with bilingual nurse practitioners or physician assistants who will analyze results and refer patients who require additional medical care and follow up to no-cost or low-cost medical facilities nearby or to their primary care physician.

U.S. News and Aetna Foundation Release 2019 Healthiest Communities Rankings

U.S. News and Aetna Foundation Release 2019 Healthiest Communities Rankings
Top of the article

Second annual list helps identify best practices and accelerate progress for community health across the country.

Washington, D.C. – March 26, 2019 – Douglas County, Colorado, is the healthiest community in America, according to the 2019 Healthiest Communities rankings by U.S. News & World Report, released today in collaboration with the Aetna Foundation. The second annual report and accompanying analysis are based on an evaluation of nearly 3,000 communities nationwide across 81 health-related metrics in 10 categories, from education and population health to infrastructure and environment. In addition to assessing which communities offer their citizens the greatest opportunity to live a productive, healthy life, the project serves as a tool to inform residents, health care leaders and elected officials about policies and best practices that help drive better health outcomes.

For 2019, the top five Healthiest Communities score above the national average in all 10 categories. Following Douglas County, Colorado, at No. 1, Los Alamos County, New Mexico, rose to No. 2, moving Falls Church city, Virginia, to No. 3, down from No. 1 in 2018. Loudoun County, Virginia, jumped up a spot to No. 4, with Broomfield County, Colorado, rounding out the top five.

“Through the Healthiest Communities initiative, U.S. News expands on three decades of expertise in measuring health care quality to assess how social determinants affect community health,” said Eric Gertler, executive chairman of U.S. News & World Report. “Our second-year endeavor with the Aetna Foundation combines high-quality data with the power of journalism to engage communities about where they can improve and how they can learn from each other.”

The Healthiest Communities rankings, underwritten by the Aetna Foundation, are part of a $100 million commitment by CVS Health and its affiliates to making community health and wellness central to the company’s charge for a better world. The new Building Healthier Communities initiative, which will be funded over five years by CVS Health and the CVS Health and Aetna foundations, builds upon the outstanding tradition of community investment by CVS Health and Aetna and advances CVS Health’s purpose of helping people on their path to better health.

“Through our support of organizations across the country, we know that the most effective and innovative solutions to improve health are consistently developed by addressing the needs of each specific community,” said Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Health. “The Healthiest Communities rankings continue to provide the insights that are essential to identify key issues and support community organizations, leaders and residents who are tackling the unique social determinants of health that impact their respective neighborhoods.”

In addition to an overall ranking of the top 500 communities, four peer groupings were developed based on counties’ urban-rural status as tied to population density and economic status. The peer groups assure fair comparisons between communities and are categorized as: urban high-performing, urban up-and-coming, rural high-performing and rural up-and-coming.

Key Findings in the 2019 Healthiest Communities rankings:

  • For 2019, Douglas County, Colorado, is the No. 1 healthiest community in America. The Denver suburb is among the top 10 healthiest communities in the country in at least four of the 81 measures, including physical activity, educational attainment and median household income.
  • Seven communities in Colorado rank among the top 20: Douglas County (1), Broomfield County (5), Chaffee County (11), Routt County (14), San Miguel County (17), Pitkin County (19) and Boulder County (20). In those seven counties, nearly all adults exercise and only about a quarter missed their annual wellness checkup. Across all of its counties, Colorado has the highest average score in the country in the Environment category, which includes measures of natural amenities and air and water quality.
  • Iowa has the strongest presence in the Healthiest Communities rankings overall, with 62 counties landing among the top 500. Average community scores put Iowa among the top 10 states in four of the 10 broad categories assessed, including Population Health and Housing. Iowa’s top-performing community, No. 26 Bremer County, takes top scores in walkability and low toxic releases.
  • 81 counties are new to this year’s top 500 communities, including Montour County, Pennsylvania, which improved in the Population Health category. Bath County, Virginia, saw significant progress in Education and Sweetwater County, Wyoming, rose in Environment.
  • Of the 81 metrics included in the Healthiest Communities analysis, diabetes prevalence and smoking rate have the strongest correlation to life expectancy. According to Healthiest Communities calculations, Hawaii counties perform the best in the country in life expectancy, with an average of 81.15 years
  • At 8.7 percent, the average smoking rate across Utah counties is the lowest in the country. The rate is about half the national average and about 3 percentage points lower than in California, the state with the second-lowest rate.
  • Poor self-reported mental health has about the same negative link to life expectancy as diabetes, smoking and physical inactivity. The same metric also is linked to higher rates of poverty at the community level.
  • Communities in Nebraska take 16 of the top 100 spots in the Mental Health subcategory, including Cherry County and Morrill County, which both score among the top 10 in the subcategory. The state has averaged 26 deaths due to suicide, alcohol-related disease and drug overdoses per 100,000 population; only New York state has averaged fewer “deaths of despair,” with 25 per 100,000 population.

To compile the rankings, U.S. News worked with the University of Missouri Center for Applied Research and Engagement Systems (CARES), a research institution skilled in community health assessment, and consulted with members of the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics. For the 2019 rankings, three new measures were added: two under the Equity category assessing racial disparities and one under the Housing category measuring households with incomplete plumbing. Overall, the rankings are based on metrics drawn from sources such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The Healthiest Communities rankings are the centerpiece of a platform featuring in-depth reporting and analysis on community and public health issues, as well as comprehensive data covering the full spectrum of factors that influence population health. Healthiest Communities is part of U.S. News’ expanding civic journalism portfolio, which includes the Best States and Best Countries sections that evaluate how government leaders and public policies best serve their citizens.

CVS Health Introduces Robust Consumer Education Resources for Upcoming Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment

Top of the article

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Nov. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced a robust educational effort to increase its customers' understanding of available insurance options during the upcoming Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health Insurance Marketplace open enrollment period of November 15, 2014 to February 15, 2015. CVS Health is partnering with numerous health insurers offering coverage on the Marketplace to conduct health insurance education events in CVS/pharmacy stores. The outreach campaign will also involve in-store brochure displays and online insurance information and tools at CVS.com/insurance. Additionally, CVS Health is releasing new data that provides an initial look at prescription drug utilization by patients newly insured under the ACA. This data examines the population enrolled and how they are using their health insurance coverage, offering valuable insights for consumers, insurers and other stakeholders as they prepare for this year's open enrollment.

"Connecting our customers with informative and accessible resources about the health insurance options in their community aligns with our purpose of helping people on their path to better health,"said Helena Foulkes, President of CVS/pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health. "As part of that effort, we are making health insurance experts available at more than 4,600 events in CVS/pharmacy stores across the country to answer customer questions and help them understand if they are eligible for lower insurance costs through the Marketplace."

This year's outreach campaign represents CVS Health's continued commitment to consumer education around the Health Insurance Marketplace, building on the successful outreach conducted during last year's open enrollment period. This year, more than 800 of the over 4,600 education opportunities will be Project Health events, which offer customers free screenings in select CVS/pharmacy stores between November and February 2015. The events will also give customers the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with insurance experts about the options available to them on the Marketplace.

In addition, CVS/pharmacy stores across the country will have free educational brochures, provided by CVS/pharmacy and numerous health plans, on hand for customers, including Spanish language materials in select locations. Online Marketplace insurance information and tools will be available at CVS.com/insurance and in Spanish at CVS.com/seguro. Consumers can find a schedule of in-store Marketplace information events with health plans at CVS.com/MarketplaceEvents.

The CVS Health Research Institute is also releasing new data comparing the population newly insured under the ACA during 2014 to other insured populations based on demographic characteristics and drug utilization. In doing this analysis, researchers looked at aggregate insurance claims from January to September 2014 for plans managed by CVS Health and compared ACA plan members with commercial health plan and managed Medicaid plan members.

Researchers found that although people enrolled in ACA coverage were slightly older than those in the commercial market, with an average age of 42 versus 37, prescription drug utilization was nearly identical, with about one-third of patients in Exchange plans using their insurance to fill prescriptions. The ACA plans' generic dispensing rate was 88 percent, exceeding rates in commercial and managed Medicaid plans, which helps explain why ACA Exchange plans have been less costly than traditional commercial insurance plans.

The data also show that patients newly insured under the ACA were more likely to have HIV and/or Hepatitis C, increasing the proportion of these plan members using specialty medications. And even though the prevalence of specialty medication use was found to be small across all plan types, specialty medications accounted for the largest proportion of total drug costs for all plans at 35.8 percent in ACA plans, 28.3 percent in commercial plans and 30.1 percent in managed Medicaid plans.

"Looking at prescription utilization for patients newly insured under the ACA shows us that these plans are providing critically needed prescription drug coverage to people with complex diseases like cancer and HIV, many of whom may have previously been unable to obtain needed insurance coverage," said William Shrank, M.D., chief scientific officer at CVS Health. "As the second ACA open enrollment period gets underway, there will be continued need for outreach and education to assure that consumers who are still uninsured sign up so that they can get the health care services they need to stay healthy."

CVS Health Chief Medical Officer to Address National Business Group on Health on Value of Pharmacy Care in Evolving Health Care System

Top of the article

WOONSOCKET, R.I., March 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., M.P.H., Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), will speak before the National Business Group on Health in Washington, D.C. today. Brennan will outline ways pharmacy care can play a critical role in addressing health care cost and quality as the overall health care system faces increased stress. After making CVS/pharmacy the first national pharmacy chain to stop selling tobacco in support of the health and well-being of its patients and customers, CVS Health is moving aggressively to provide innovative new tools that can assist patients, providers and health plans improve medication adherence and ultimately improve health.

"Medication non-adherence can have a significant impact on patients' health outcomes and it costs the nation's health care system nearly $300 billion every year," Brennan said. "Sadly, one of the most significant challenges is patients often don't take their medications. They forget or they're confused, or they fail to understand why they should be taking them."

Brennan will highlight CVS Health's unique Pharmacy Advisor program designed to connect pharmacists, health care providers and health plans to deliver better care and value by stressing the importance of adherence to prescribed medications. He will also highlight innovations that are continuing to expand CVS Health's adherence program offerings, including packaging designed to help patients manage multiple medications and digital tools like texting and messaging patients about their medications.

"We can improve adherence and reduce gaps in care by connecting and integrating our interactions with patients, taking advantage of our ability to counsel patients at convenient touch points," Brennan said.

In his remarks, Brennan will also discuss how CVS Health is working to meet the needs of an evolving health care system. He will observe trends in health care costs and strategies to manage costs, Medicare and state health care budgets, employer-provided insurance and new modes of care delivery. He will examine how the post-recession climate and implementation of the Affordable Care Act are changing health care.

Brennan will also describe the critical role CVS/minuteclinic plays in the transforming health care system by providing accessible, quality, low-cost care. Through its clinics, CVS/minuteclinic can help patients with acute ailments or monitor chronic care for conditions like diabetes and hypertension, working directly with primary care doctors as part of the patient-centered medical home using electronic medical records.

CVS Health Foundation Supports New Program for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis, Disclosure and Education

Top of the article

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Feb. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --The CVS Health Foundation today announced a $550,000 commitment to the Alzheimer's Association to support expanded provider education and diagnosis resources for individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and caregivers through their local chapters across the United States.

Despite the clear benefits of knowing an Alzheimer's diagnosis, only 45 percent of Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers say their doctor told them they have the disease.

"The CVS Health Foundation is proud to support the Alzheimer's Association in its effort to ensure that more people with Alzheimer's are able to comprehend their diagnosis and receive affordable, high-quality care and support," said Eileen Howard Boone, president of the CVS Health Foundation. "By facilitating care consultation interventions when a diagnosis is provided, the Alzheimer's Association is helping to maximize a patient's quality of life, which directly aligns with our company's purpose of helping people on their path to better health."

Effective health care provider outreach and education are essential for helping people with Alzheimer's disease achieve their best quality of life. According to the Alzheimer's Association's 2015 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures report, the number of people living with Alzheimer's is expected to rise from over 5 million today to more than 16 million by 2050. In 2015, Alzheimer's and other dementias cost the nation an estimated $226 billion. By 2050, these costs are expected to rise as high as $1.1 trillion.

In addition, the report showed that only 45 percent of people with Alzheimer's or their caregivers say they were told the diagnosis by their doctor. This low diagnosis percentage remains the reality, despite studies finding several benefits - including allowing for better decision-making, medical care and future planning - in clearly explaining a diagnosis of dementia to the affected patient.

"With the support from the CVS Health Foundation, our local chapters can play an even stronger role in educating health care providers on the importance of diagnosing dementia," said Beth Kallmyer, vice president, constituent services, Alzheimer's Association. "By connecting people with the disease and their caregivers with the community resources they need, we believe patients are better positioned to live their best life with the disease."

Alzheimer's Association Chapters with provider relationships will be invited to apply for grants of between $25,000 and $100,000 to implement a one-year health care provider outreach and education strategy and establish or expand an automatic referral process for education and care consultations, with the goal of increasing the number of people in each chapter with access to care and support programs.

SilverScript Insurance Company, a CVS Health Company, Introduces New Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Options for 2017

Top of the article

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Oct. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- SilverScript Insurance Company, a CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) company, today announced its new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) options for 2017. Medicare beneficiaries in the continental U.S. can choose from two SilverScript plans that offer a $0-deductible on formulary drugs in all five tiers, affordable copays and competitive premiums. In addition, SilverScript beneficiaries have access to one of the broadest pharmacy networks, with more than 66,000 participating pharmacies across the country, including national and regional chains and independently-owned, community-based pharmacies.

"Our plans are unique in that our beneficiaries will continue to have access to a $0-deductible for drugs on all tiers of the formulary, not just for lower-tier drugs that are primarily generics, and SilverScript is the only national basic plan with this feature," said Todd Meek, president, SilverScript Insurance Company, CVS Health.

SilverScript will provide two innovative Part D plan options in 2017: SilverScript Choice and SilverScript Plus. SilverScript Choice is a basic plan that offers comprehensive coverage with competitive premiums and the same affordable copay at every pharmacy in the network, and SilverScript Plus is an enhanced plan that provides additional coverage in the Coverage Gap (Donut Hole). The Plus plan is designed for people who take several medications on a regular basis and are likely to reach the Coverage Gap during the 2017 plan year.

SilverScript Awarded 4-star High Performer Rating Issued by CMS
SilverScript maintained its 4-star performance rating from CMS for 2017, surpassing industry standards in delivering value, clinical outcomes and customer service. CMS annually evaluates and rates plan performance of Medicare Part D prescription drug plans based on quality, value and service measures. Plans are scored on a scale of one to five, with five stars being the highest achievable rating.

"Few plans achieve a 4-star or higher rating from CMS, and we are focused on continued improvement as we strive to maintain our performance and quality rating," added Meek. "As an objective tool, the CMS Star Ratings system is also a helpful way for Medicare eligible individuals who are making annual coverage elections to easily identify which prescription drug plans will offer high quality service and value and be assured of industry-leading coverage."

Enrollment for the 2017 plan year begins on October 15, 2016, through December 7, 2016. Consumers interested in learning more about the SilverScript plan options can visit www.silverscript.com, or call toll-free 1-866-552-6106, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TTY users call 1-866-552-6288.

CVS Pharmacy to Help Patients Understand Health Insurance Options During Medicare Part D Open Enrollment for 2017

Top of the article

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Oct. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced today that it will offer an extensive array of in-store and online resources to assist senior patients in determining the best 2017 Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during the Annual Enrollment period. Open enrollment for Medicare Part D begins October 15 and ends December 7, 2016.

Convenient access to information about local and national Medicare Part D plans will be available to patients in both English and Spanish at all 9,600 CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide. In addition, more than 11,000 informational events will be held in select CVS Pharmacy stores across the country during the Open Enrollment period where representatives from local health plans will provide Medicare Part D information to eligible patients and answer any questions they may have.

CVS Pharmacy's online Health Insurance Information Center, www.cvs.com/Medicare, offers information on available Medicare Part D plans. The website features information that helps seniors find a plan in their community and guides them on how to enroll. For seniors evaluating Medicare Part D plans, they can enter their prescription information and zip code to compare plans available to them. Patients can also find a listing of store informational insurance events in their community.

"Selecting a Medicare Part D plan can be confusing and stressful for patients. That's why it's important they understand the many plan options available to them," said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, Pharmacy Services and Supply Chain, for CVS Health. "By making our pharmacists available to help patients better understand their options and offering access to health insurance information at our stores and online, we're arming patients with the tools they need to determine which plan best meets their health care needs."

CVS Pharmacy does not endorse any specific Medicare Part D plan and accepts most major Medicare prescription drug plans. It is participating in several regional and national Part D preferred pharmacy networks which offer additional savings opportunities for Medicare beneficiaries, including no or low co-pays on generic medications.

During the Annual Enrollment period, Medicare beneficiaries can review their prescription coverage and enroll in a new plan for 2017 if they choose. Because Medicare Part D plans change each year and patients' individual prescription needs may change, comparing plans could save hundreds of dollars.

As patients evaluate the available prescription drug plans, it is important for them to consider their annual deductible, premium and co-payments, as well as which plans cover the prescriptions they are taking, any out-of-pocket expenses, and if their pharmacy is included in the plan.
