CVS Pharmacy Completes Rollout of Time Delay Safes in All of Its Tennessee Pharmacies

Top of the article

New safes for controlled substances will help combat opioid epidemic in the state and reduce robbery incidents

All 169 CVS Pharmacy locations in Tennessee area now using time-delay safe technology

WOONSOCKET, R.I., April 4, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS), announced today that it has completed the rollout of time delay safes in all of its 169 CVS Pharmacy locations in Tennessee. The safes will help prevent pharmacy robberies and combat the ongoing opioid epidemic in the state by helping to prevent diversion of controlled substance narcotic medications by keeping them out of the hands of unauthorized individuals. In addition, the safes will help CVS Pharmacy ensure the safety and well-being of its customers and employees.

Controlled substance narcotic medications that are sought after by robbers, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, are now stored in time delay safes in every CVS Pharmacy in the state of Tennessee. Time delay safes help deter pharmacy robberies by electronically delaying the time it takes for pharmacy employees to be able to open the safe. CVS Pharmacy first implemented time delay safes in Indianapolis, a city experiencing a high volume of pharmacy robberies, in 2015. The company saw a 70 percent decline in pharmacy robberies among the Indianapolis stores where the time delay safes had been installed.

"Pharmacy robberies are a challenging issue for every pharmacy and we are committed to doing all we can to reduce the number of pharmacy robbery incidents in our Tennessee stores," said Everett Moore, Division Vice President of CVS Pharmacy. "We have seen that time delay safes, combined with the other security policies and procedures in place at our stores, can greatly reduce these incidents and are pleased to roll out this enhanced security measure. These safes will help ensure that our pharmacies remain a safe environment for our patients and colleagues."

"CVS Health has been a great community partner in Tennessee, and I applaud the company on the installation of time delay safes in all of their pharmacies across our state," said State Senator Steven Dickerson. "The opioid epidemic has hit Tennessee especially hard, as it has so many other states, and our communities are working to fight this growing problem each and every day. An important way to do so is to ensure that medications are kept out of the wrong hands and these safes will help do just that."

The time delay function cannot be overridden and is designed to serve as a deterrent to would-be pharmacy robbers whose goal is to enter and exit their robbery targets as quickly as possible. All CVS Pharmacy locations with time delay safes display highly-visible signage to inform the public that time delay safes are in use to prevent on-demand access to controlled substance narcotics.

"Abuse of prescription painkillers and other medication is a significant factor in Nashville's crime. From time to time, pharmacies are targeted," said Deputy Chief William "Todd" Henry, Metro Nashville Police Department and representing the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police. "The use of smart technology, like that being displayed today, to help prevent thefts, burglaries and robberies enhances the safety of us all."

The implementation of time delay safes across all CVS Pharmacy locations in Tennessee is the latest in a series of measures put in place by CVS Health to help combat prescription drug abuse in the state. CVS Health's commitment to preventing and addressing prescription drug abuse extends to community education, efforts to encourage safe disposal of unused medication and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company's Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS Pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students and parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 456,000 students across the country, including 5,390 in Tennessee, have participated in the program.

CVS Health has also completed installation of 19 safe medication disposal units in CVS Pharmacy stores in Tennessee, in addition to the five units it has donated to Tennessee law enforcement agencies. Nationwide, nearly 1,000 safe medication disposal units have been installed in CVS Pharmacy locations, adding to the more than 900 units the company has donated to law enforcement agencies. In total, the company has facilitated nearly 1,900 units nationwide, which have collected more than 719,000 pounds, or 326 metric tons of unwanted medication, including more than 5,700 pounds, or more than 2.5 metric tons in Tennessee alone. Increasing community access to safe medication disposal helps rid homes of unused medications that could otherwise be diverted, abused or contaminate the water supply if disposed of improperly.

Additionally, CVS Health has worked with 48 states including Tennessee and Washington, DC to increase access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone, also known as Narcan. Patients can obtain this life-saving medication, which is a safe and effective antidote to opioid overdoses, without an individual prescription in these states.

SilverScript Plus is an enhanced plan that provides additional coverage in the Coverage Gap (or Donut Hole). The Plus plan is designed for people who take several medications on a regular basis and are likely to reach the Coverage Gap during the 2018 plan year. SilverScript Plus offers lower monthly premiums than in 2017, $0 deductible on all covered drugs, and $0 copays for 90-day supplies of both Tier 1 and Tier 2 drugs nationwide through the CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy. CVS Health Recognizes its 30,000 Pharmacists during American Pharmacists Month

Top of the article

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Oct. 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of October's American Pharmacists Month, CVS Health (NYSE:CVS) is celebrating the important role its nearly 30,000 pharmacists play in helping people on their path to better health. The company's pharmacists are helping to change the way health care is delivered by increasing access, lowering costs and improving care quality in the company's retail, mail service and specialty pharmacies across the country.

"Whether providing face-to-face consultations at the pharmacy counter or helping patients with complex conditions manage their specialty medications by phone, our pharmacists are truly the front line of health care," said Larry Merlo, President and CEO, CVS Health. "Our pharmacists are not only trusted resources for patients, but are also key players in the evolution of CVS Health, delivering innovative products and services and enabling our patients and clients to manage health in more effective and affordable ways."

Beyond simply filling prescriptions, CVS Health pharmacists are helping the company's patients manage their health care through a number of programs and services.

  • As medication experts within the broader health care team, CVS Health pharmacists are helping identify potential barriers to medication adherence and offering solutions to help encourage patients to stay adherent. Pharmacists also educate patients about potential side effects and drug interactions and help identify potential gaps in care for those with complex medical conditions.

  • CVS Pharmacy and CVS Specialty pharmacists are working together to provide patients choice and flexibility in how they access their specialty medications and receive expert clinical support through the Specialty Connect program. The partnership gives patients the option to bring their specialty prescriptions to any CVS Pharmacy, while still receiving insurance guidance and dedicated clinical support by phone from a team of specialty pharmacy experts at CVS Specialty.

  • Pharmacists are providing convenient and accessible access to flu shots and other vaccinations at every CVS Pharmacy location nationwide seven days a week with no appointment needed, including evenings and weekends.

  • CVS pharmacists are helping patients understand their prescription insurance coverage options under Medicare Part D and the Affordable Care Act during open enrollment, which begins on October 15 and November 1, respectively.

  • CVS pharmacists are working to reduce prescription drug abuse through the company's Pharmacists Teach program. This community outreach program connects pharmacists with high school health classes to share vital information about the dangers of improper drug use. CVS pharmacists have already delivered this program to more than 100,000 students across the country.

In 2016, CVS Health welcomed nearly 6,000 pharmacists from Target to the company. Noted Merlo, "These new colleagues bring a wealth of health care knowledge and expertise to our team and are spearheading our efforts to introduce Target guests to our suite of pharmacy care services and innovative digital pharmacy tools."

In addition, CVS Health will celebrate National Pharmacy Technician Day on October 18 to recognize the company's more than 50,000 pharmacy technicians for the valued support they provide to CVS pharmacists and pharmacy teams across the organization.

CVS Health Survey Reveals Two in Three Americans who plan to get a Flu Shot Believe it is the Best Way to Prevent the Flu

Top of the article

Convenience (37%), doctor recommendations (36%) and insurance acceptance (35%) rank as top three determining factors on where Americans get their flu shot

Flu vaccine is now available at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide

WOONSOCKET, R.I., Aug. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Marking the start of flu vaccine availability, a new survey from CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) released today found that nearly two-thirds (61 percent) of Americans get a flu vaccine every year, or plan to get one this year, resulting in a two percent increase from last year's survey findings. Of those who get a flu vaccine every year and plan to get one this year, 67 percent do so because they believe it's the best way to prevent themselves from getting the flu. All CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide are now offering flu vaccinations.

What's New with the flu infographic link

The annual flu survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS Pharmacy in July 2017[1] among over 2,000 U.S. adults ages 18+, also found that nearly two in three (65 percent) employed Americans would still go to work even if they were feeling ill with flu-like symptoms.

Among those who have ever received a flu vaccine, 44 percent say they most often get the vaccine from their primary care provider or other health care professional, while 22 percent most often get it from a local pharmacy or drugstore. However, there has been a significant increase (up 7 percent from last year) in employed flu vaccine receivers who get the vaccine most often at their workplace, now tied with local pharmacy or drugstore at 22 percent.

"We recognize that staying on top of your health can sometimes be daunting, especially for busy families, and flu vaccinations are no exception to this," said Papatya Tankut, Vice President of Pharmacy Affairs at CVS Health. "This year's survey demonstrates the increasing number of factors that go into deciding where, when, and how to get vaccinated, which is why CVS Pharmacy continues to strive to make health care quick, easy and accessible for patients."

Flu vaccinations are conveniently available seven days a week at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations nationwide with no appointment needed.[2] CVS Pharmacy can provide flu shots to adolescents (in some states, depending on regulations), adults and seniors. MinuteClinic can provide flu shots to children 18 months and up, adolescents, adults and seniors, making it easy to vaccinate the whole family in one trip.[3] In addition, customers will receive a $5 off $25 coupon when they get a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic.[4] Patients who receive a flu shot at CVS Pharmacy or MinuteClinic locations inside select Target stores will receive a $5 Target coupon.[5]

Although 52 percent of Americans protect themselves from catching the flu by getting the flu vaccine, there has been a significant increase in the percentage of Americans who also incorporate other prevention methods into their lifestyles to help stop the spread of germs and stay healthy. For example, 41 percent of Americans regularly use hand sanitizer to stop the spreading of germs (up 3% from last year). Americans are also reporting protecting themselves from the flu by drinking more water (55%, up 4% from last year), taking vitamins (50%, up 4% from last year), eating more nutritious food (44%, up 2% from last year), and staying physically active (43%, up 4% from last year).

Other notable findings from the survey include:

  • Women are 12 percent more likely than men to get their flu vaccine from their primary care physician or other health care professional's office
  • 76 percent of seniors (age 65 and up) get the flu vaccine every year and/or plan on getting the flu shot this year
  • For Americans who have ever gotten a flu shot, fall months are still the most popular time to get the vaccine, with October being the most popular month (36 percent)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone who is eligible and at least six months old get a flu shot when the vaccine becomes available, preferably by October.

"People may not realize that it can actually take up to two weeks for the flu vaccine to build immunity," said Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer at MinuteClinic. "For this reason, CVS Pharmacy actually recommends that patients get their flu shot as soon as the vaccine becomes available to ensure you have the best protection before flu season peaks. Additionally, influenza strains tend to change each year, so it's very important to get vaccinated every year to make sure you are protected."

The flu vaccine is a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, fully covered and available at no cost through most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B. CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic can directly bill many national and regional health plans that cover all or part of the cost of a flu shot.

Please visit CVS.com and/or MinuteClinic.com for more information and additional resources. Consumers can also visit CVS.com or use the CVS Pharmacy app to locate a nearby CVS Pharmacy. Patients planning to go to MinuteClinic to get their flu shot can visit MinuteClinic.com to view wait times or schedule a visit online for a future date at their chosen clinic.

Survey Methodology

This survey was conducted online within the United States between July 12-14, 2017 among 2,074 adults aged 18+ by Harris Poll on behalf of CVS Pharmacy. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

The newest introductions to the comprehensive collection of pampering bath and body products allows women to choose among a variety of indulgent fragrance options crafted by expert international perfumers. Bringing their diverse experience and passion for innovation to the Essence of Beauty brand, the master perfumers drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including the duality of natural wilderness and chemistry, famed cities and exotic locations, and the imagined scents of a special photograph, childhood story, or time period in life.

Essence of Beauty's advanced formulas contain fine ingredients, including nourishing and calming passion flower seed oil, high in anti-inflammatory essential fatty acids and Vitamin C, as well as antioxidant-rich rice bran oil, which contains Vitamin E to help protect and hydrate skin while fighting free radicals. Products in the Essence of Beauty line are now free of parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, gluten, and artificial dye, responding to customer desires for more natural formulas. Additionally, Essence of Beauty is not tested on animals.

"Since its launch 10 years ago, Essence of Beauty has consistently been one of the best-selling fragrance and body care brands at CVS/pharmacy," said George Coleman, Vice President of Store Brands at CVS/pharmacy. "By partnering with some of the best master perfumers in the industry to create new fragrances and enhanced formulas exclusively for our customers, we've developed an extensive line of high-quality products that offer at-home indulgence while maintaining the accessibility and affordability that shoppers have come to expect from CVS/pharmacy."

The Essence of Beauty Fine Fragrance Collection now consists of fourteen distinct scent offerings, including four new master-crafted scents and the Shea Indulgence treatment line.

  • Secret Woods: Evoking the alluring mystery of a hidden forest, mesmerizing pomegranate, soft jasmine petals, and warm vanilla musk entice and intrigue you.
  • Forever Paris: Like a new romance blossoming in the world's most famous city of love, decadent Parisian roses, just-blushing tulips and notes of strawberry sweep you off your feet.
  • Wind Kissed: Spring flowers dance delicately in the breeze as cotton flower, mimosa and white amber combine in calming harmony.
  • In The Tropics: Like the tropical spirit found at the heart of the islands, pink grapefruit and juicy pomelo mingle with wild agave, cyclamen flowers, and sandalwood cream to invigorate and intrigue.
  • Shea Indulgence Shea Butter Treatment: Luxuriate in bliss as exotic tiare flower, silky shea butter, coconut milk, and warm vanilla soothe and rejuvenate.

In addition, the current best-selling fragrance lines Sweet Paradise, Cool Rain, Sensual Night, Island Dream, Citrus Coconut, Japanese Garden, Lilies & Freesia, Sun Blossom, and White Lavender have been refreshed with new formulations and packaging. All fragrances are available in a variety of products, including Fine Fragrance Body Mists, Bath & Shower Gels, Body Lotions, Body & Hand Creams, and Travel Collections. Prices range between $1.99 and $12.99.

The updated Essence of Beauty line is available exclusively at all CVS/pharmacy locations nationwide and online at www.EssenceofBeauty.com. The dedicated site, which is also mobile accessible, offers in-depth interviews with the perfumers behind the fragrances, a scent finder, downloadable wallpapers, and online-only deals.
