Top of the article

ATLANTA Aetna, a CVS Health company (NYSE: CVS), is now offering fully insured and self-insured health care network options to its Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Exclusive Product Organization (EPO) product portfolios through Aetna Whole Health℠Atlanta.

As part of the greater metro-Atlanta area launch, two local distinguished health systems, Emory Healthcare and Northside Hospital System, are teaming up with Aetna Whole Health Atlanta beginning on April 1. These award-winning and nationally recognized health care systems and other providers will offer Aetna Whole Health Atlanta members access to approximately 900 primary care doctors, 3500 specialists, 14 hospitals and more than 500 outpatient care facilities across the metro-Atlanta area.

"Our Whole Health offering is the first of its kind in Atlanta, developed to support a unique PCP delivery model, providing quality medical care by way of doctor-driven plans," said Frank Ulibarri, Aetna's president in Georgia. "Over the past two years, we worked diligently to improve both the experience and cost structure for our members in the market. The result is a product that truly acts as a bridge, allowing more coordinated and accessible health care options, designed to lead to better outcomes."

Aetna Whole Health features a new model of health care delivery created to:

  • Reward doctors for improving patient care quality
  • Lower medical cost growth over time by reducing waste, improving care coordination and closing care gaps
  • Enhance each patient's experience with care management programs
  • Support effective patient and primary care doctor relationships

Northside Hospital leads the U.S. in newborn deliveries and is among the state's top providers of cancer care, sports medicine, cardiovascular and surgical services. As the most comprehensive academic health system in Georgia, Emory Healthcare offers exceptional care and innovative discovery across more than 70 specialties, including national rankings in nine specialties and Georgia's first and only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.

"Emory Healthcare and the Emory Healthcare Network are pleased to collaborate with Aetna as it offers a new health care network option to Atlantans," says Jonathan S. Lewin, MD, president, CEO and chairman of the board of Emory Healthcare. "Providing health care options will allow local residents to choose the most appropriate plan for themselves and their families, with a continued focus on excellence in quality, care delivery and outcomes."

As a key feature, CVS HealthHUBs are fully integrated into this new care model for Atlanta. HealthHUBs are recognized for an expanded range of services, including primary care and wellness products. Today, there are 16 HealthHUBs operating in the region with 15 to 20 additional locations planned for 2020.

"This new infrastructure allows doctors and their care teams to do what they've been trained to do focus on providing quality medical care," said Eric Anderson, regional vice president, Aetna. "We are excited about the positive impact this innovative product may bring to employers, employees and their families in greater Atlanta."

Addressing out-of-pocket costs for diabetes patients

Bottom of the article

Rising costs are a burden for too many people living with diabetes today. Patients with a high-deductible health plan shoulder all of their medication costs while in the deductible phase of their insurance, which means they may be forced to make difficult decisions about whether they can afford their medications and fill their prescription.

Recent data reveal there is uncertainty on how to manage and predict the out-of-pocket costs associated with diabetes management. For example, nearly one-third of patients (32 percent) do not feel they have the resources needed to manage their own out-of-pocket costs. To address this challenge, CVS Health is working to eliminate member cost as a barrier to medication adherence.

Improving medication affordability and adherence

Improving diabetes outcomes while reducing costs is a priority for CVS Health. We recently launched RxZERO to enable employers and health plan sponsors to leverage formulary and plan design approaches to offer all categories of diabetes medications at zero dollar out of pocket for their members without raising costs for the plan sponsor or increasing premiums or deductibles for all plan members. The new plan design enables plan sponsors to eliminate member out of-pocket costs for the entire diabetes therapeutic area — including oral medications for Type 2 diabetes — and fully adhere to American Diabetes Association standards.

“Traditionally, the focus of affordability for diabetes medications has been on insulin, which is the cornerstone of therapy for the five percent of people with diabetes who are living with type 1 diabetes. However, the new CVS Caremark solution expands affordable options to include the entire range of diabetes medications — improving affordability for the 95 percent of people with diabetes who are living with type 2 diabetes.”

— Troyen A. Brennan, M.D., M.P.H., is Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health

CVS Caremark analysis shows that members taking branded diabetes medications spend on average, $467.24 out-of-pocket per year, with nearly 12 percent spending over $1,000 annually.

A comprehensive approach to diabetes management

A person living with diabetes is required to take many tasks to manage their therapy annually. To make disease management affordable, accessible and local, CVS Health offers numerous programs to help people with diabetes effectively manage their condition and stay on track with their prescribed treatment plan.

We provide supportive care at our HealthHUB locations to complement the care that patients receive from their primary care physicians. Our HealthHUB model provides a first-of-its-kind community-based store that offers a broader range of health services, new product categories, digital and on-demand health tools and trusted advice. In these locations, people living with diabetes are able to receive the coordinated care and services they need all within our own four walls.

Taking control of diabetes with HealthHUB

Bottom of the article

HealthHUB, our first-of-its-kind concept store now open in select locations nationwide, connects patients with health care services, advice and personalized care right at their neighborhood CVS Pharmacy.

This ease of accessibility was what prompted Luis to stop by his local HealthHUB to see someone about abdominal pain he was experiencing.

What he and the nurse practitioner discovered was that the issues he was having went beyond simple pain: He was diabetic, but wasn’t currently being treated for the condition. Within his 40-minute visit, the HealthHUB team set Luis up to meet with both an eye doctor and a dietician and he left with a treatment and management plan in place.

Watch the video to learn more about how Luis’s trip to his local HealthHUB got him back on track.

CVS Health names more U.S. cities for HealthHUB expansion

Bottom of the article

CVS Health today announced plans to bring its new HealthHUB® store format to more U.S. markets in the first half of 2020 as part of a nationwide expansion. The HealthHUB format will come to select CVS Pharmacy locations in the following cities and states: Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

The company also said it plans to add HealthHUB locations in other major metropolitan markets in Florida, and deploy a limited expansion in Hartford, New York City and Washington D.C., also in the first half of next year.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing HealthHUBs to more regions and zip codes,” said Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, CVS Health and President of CVS Pharmacy. “Our customers tell us they want local access to convenient, personalized and integrated health care support and services. HealthHUB delivers on that ask and we can’t wait for customers in these communities to benefit from a better health care experience.”

In June, and as part of the company’s accelerated growth strategy, CVS Health announced plans to open approximately 50 additional HealthHUB locations in Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and Tampa this year, with up to 1,500 HealthHUB locations planned to be operating by the end of 2021.

“Our customers tell us they want local access to convenient, personalized and integrated health care support and services,” said Kevin Hourican, President of CVS Pharmacy. “HealthHUB delivers on that ask and we can’t wait for customers in these communities to benefit from a better health care experience.”

Representing a major transformational initiative resulting from the combination of CVS Health and Aetna, HealthHUB is a first-of-its-kind community-based store concept focused on helping customers get well — and stay well — by offering a broader range of healthcare services, wellness products and services, trusted advice and personalized care, all with the ease of walking right into a local CVS Pharmacy.

CVS Health says its expansion plans are predicated on the performance of its 3 HealthHUB pilot stores in Houston, Texas. Early results show pilot stores exceeding initial business projections as measured by increases in front store sales, MinuteClinic visits per day and prescriptions dispensed. Importantly, overall customer satisfaction with pharmacy and front store are also meaningfully higher in HealthHUB locations than the rest of the company’s retail network.

Added Hourican, “Our customers love the new format. And by creating a unique health care experience that meets consumers where they are and helps them achieve their best health at a lower cost, we’ve set the stage for our company to compete and win in an industry that is rapidly transforming.”

CVS Health announces significant expansion of HealthHUB to deliver a differentiated, consumer health experience

Bottom of the article

When CVS Health completed its acquisition of Aetna in November 2018, it set a bold course to transform the consumer health care experience in America. Today, the combined company is taking an accelerated step in its work by announcing a significant expansion of HealthHUB locations at CVS Pharmacy stores across the country.

Building on the success and customer response to its HealthHUB pilot in Houston, the company will open additional locations in Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and Tampa this year, and plans to have 1,500 HealthHUB locations operating by the end of 2021.

“Improving health outcomes starts with transforming the consumer health experience, connecting with people in their communities. Through physical and virtual interactions, we provide convenient, personalized and integrated access to health care support and services,” said Alan Lotvin, M.D., Chief Transformation Officer for CVS Health. “Our HealthHUBs in Houston are generating tremendously positive customer response. The opportunity to engage with a team of in-store and remote colleagues, including pharmacists, nurse practitioners, care managers and support staff resonates with consumers. We’re thrilled to be creating this seamless, long overdue experience that consumers want.”

For the past six months, the company has been piloting three HealthHUB locations in Houston that offer a broader range of health care services, new product categories, digital and on-demand health tools, trusted advice and personalized care. With the new format more than 20% of the store is now dedicated to health services, including new durable medical equipment (DME) and supplies and new product and service combinations for sleep apnea and diabetes care.

With personalized Pharmacy support programs and expanded MinuteClinic services, HealthHUB teams are improving care for patients managing chronic conditions, with a focus on recommending next best clinical actions and driving medical costs savings. The HealthHUB store format also includes a variety of pathways to nutritional health with one-on-one and group counseling delivered by an in-store dietitian, as well as access to weight loss programs.

Acting as the connection point inside the HealthHUB is the care concierge, a newly established role responsible for customer engagement, including educating customers about our new service offerings, helping them navigate the in-store services and events, and connecting them to our in-store providers.

“Our HealthHUBs are generating tremendously positive customer response. We’re thrilled to be creating this seamless, long overdue experience that consumers want.”

– Alan Lotvin, M.D., Chief Transformation Officer

The design of the HealthHUB also includes community spaces and digitally enabled offerings. Wellness rooms are available for CVS professionals and community partners to host group events, including health classes, nutritional seminars and benefits education. In addition, there are learning tables that include iPads for customers to explore health and wellness apps, as well as shop our expanded product selection on cvs.com.

“Most of the time, I would run into the CVS Pharmacy when I was sick or just needed a few convenience items,” said Jacqueline H., a longtime CVS Pharmacy customer and Houston resident. “I was quite surprised with all of the health and wellness products, support services and community events inside the store. HealthHUB makes you want to be healthy and stay healthy.”

For Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, CVS Health and President of CVS Pharmacy, the HealthHUB format marks a forward leap in what’s already a revolution in health care.

“We have a sense of urgency about the need to bring real change to health care,” said Hourican. “What’s clear to us is that it will take more than incremental steps to fix what is broken in the health care system. That’s why we’re excited about how the combination of CVS and Aetna can establish an innovative health care model that will create an entirely new consumer experience and help people on their path to better health.”

CVS Health testing new HealthHUB store format

Bottom of the article

When CVS Health completed its acquisition of Aetna in November 2018, it set a bold course to transform the consumer health care experience in America. Today, the combined company is taking an important step in its work with the introduction of HealthHUB® locations at CVS Pharmacy stores in Houston, Texas.

“We believe that transforming the consumer health care experience begins with creating a new front door to health care,” said Alan Lotvin, chief transformation officer for CVS Health. “Our new HealthHUB locations are just that — helping to elevate the store into a convenient neighborhood health care destination that brings easier access to better care at a lower cost.”

The company is piloting a total of three HealthHUB® locations in Houston that offer a broader range of health care services, new product categories, digital tools and on-demand health kiosks, trusted advice and personalized care. With the new format over 20 percent of the store is now dedicated to health services, including new durable medical equipment (DME) and supplies and new product and service combinations for sleep apnea and diabetes care.

With personalized Pharmacy support programs and MinuteClinic services, the HUB team is improving care for patients managing chronic conditions, with a focus on recommending next best clinical actions and driving medical costs savings.

The new store format also includes a variety of pathways to nutritional health with one-on-one and group counseling delivered by an in-store licensed dietitian, as well as access to a free weight loss digital app.

Acting as the connection point inside the HealthHUB® is the Care Concierge, a newly established professional responsible for customer engagement, including educating customers about our new service offerings, helping them navigate the in-store services and events, and connecting them to our in-store providers. To date, customers accepted help from our Care Concierge in more than 95 percent of recorded interactions, with 50 percent resulting in engagement with another HealthHUB® provider or offering.

The design of the HealthHUB® also includes community spaces and digitally enabled offerings. Wellness Rooms are available for CVS professionals and community partners to host group events, including health classes, nutritional seminars and benefits education. There are Learning Tables that include iPads for customers to explore health and wellness apps, as well as shop our expanded product selection on cvs.com. And there are On-Demand Health Kiosks that help customers measure and track their blood pressure, weight and BMI.

“Most of the time, I would run into the CVS Pharmacy when I was sick or just needed a few convenience items,” said Jacqueline Haynes, a longtime CVS Pharmacy customer and Houston resident. “I was quite surprised with all of the health and wellness products, support services and community events inside the store. HealthHUB makes you want to be healthy and stay healthy.”

CVS Health is encouraged by its early results and customer response to HealthHUB®. The company says it will continue to pilot the Houston-based locations, with the goal of continuing to innovate and test to determine the right mix of products and services that can impact patient health while being scalable.

“We have a sense of urgency about the need to bring real change to health care,” said Kevin Hourican, EVP, CVS Health and president of CVS Pharmacy. “What’s clear to us is that it will take more than incremental steps to fix what is broken in the health care system. That’s why we’re excited about how the combination of CVS and Aetna can begin to establish an innovative health care model that will create an entirely new consumer experience and help people on their path to better health.”
