WOONSOCKET, R.I., May 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CVS/pharmacy has taken steps to prepare for the 2006 hurricane season. Stores have been stocked with hurricane preparedness items and other products to help in an emergency. CVS/pharmacy is also prepared to deploy mobile pharmacy units to hurricane-impacted areas if necessary. The NOAA National Hurricane Center has designated May 21-27, 2006 National Hurricane Preparedness Week. According to the National Hurricane Center, knowing what actions to take during a hurricane reduces the effects of a disaster.

"Given the NOAA National Hurricane Center's advisory for the year, CVS/pharmacy is taking steps to prepare our stores and assist our customers," said Eileen Howard Dunn, Vice President of Corporate Communications and Community Relations at CVS/pharmacy.

When preparing for a hurricane, CVS/pharmacy offers the following tips: 1. Create a plan for evacuating and finding a safe destination. 2. Keep a written record of your current prescriptions with you at all times in a plastic container to keep it safe from damage. This is especially important if you take multiple prescriptions. 3. In the event of an emergency when you are away from home, find a pharmacy near-by to fill necessary prescriptions. CVS/pharmacy can fill its customers' prescriptions at any of its 5,400 locations nationwide. 4. Create an emergency kit before a storm hits and make sure you have all essentials in case of power outages. Go to your local CVS/pharmacy for all of the necessities in a hurricane kit including extra bottled water, masking tape and batteries. CVS/pharmacy also carries special merchandise for hurricane preparation, including battery operated fans, rechargeable crank radios, hand-operated rechargeable flashlights and car adaptor invertors.

CVS/pharmacy is promoting its participation in Governor Jeb Bush's 2006 Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, happening May 21-June 1 in Florida. No state or local sales tax will be collected on essential hurricane preparedness items during this time period in Florida stores.

In 2005, CVS/pharmacy and the CVS/pharmacy Charitable Trust donated a combined $504,000 in money and supplies to the American Red Cross in order to assist with relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina. CVS/pharmacy also deployed 30 mobile pharmacy units to the impacted areas along the Gulf Coast.
