Independent commission formed to look at ways to change physician payments with an eye to reining in health care costs and improving quality
WOONSOCKET, R.I., March 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS) today announced that Troyen A. Brennan, MD, MPH, executive vice president and chief medical officer of the company, has been named to the National Commission on Physician Payment Reform, an independent commission that will assess how physicians are paid, and how pay incentives are linked to patient care.
The commission is sponsored by the Society of General Internal Medicine. The new panel is comprised of physicians, representatives from health care, insurance, a state health department, as well as health policy leaders and a consumer representative. The Commission will meet over the course of one year and issue recommendations in early 2013. The Commission is funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the California Healthcare Foundation, and the Sergei Zlinkoff Fund for Medical Education and Research.
Before joining CVS Caremark in 2008, Brennan served as chief medical officer for Aetna Inc and president and CEO of Brigham and Women's Physicians Organization in Boston, MA. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He has his MD and MPH from Yale Medical School, a JD from Yale Law School, a MA from Oxford University and a BS from Southern Methodist University, Texas.
