U.S. News & World Report and the Aetna Foundation hosted the first-ever Community Health Leadership Award dinner. Below is information on the honorees and the work they’re doing to build healthier communities.
With a B.A. from Notre Dame and M.P.P from Harvard, Kathryn Lawler serves as the first executive director for the Atlanta Regional Collaborative for Health Improvement (ARCHI). She brings experience in the development and implementation of cross-sector interventions to address complex social issues. ARCHI is a collaborative founded by the United Way, Atlanta Regional Commission, and the Georgia Health Policy Center. Lawler helped ARCHI develop its 28-year strategy focused on both immediate health conditions and the larger, upstream issues that result in poor health. As executive director she is responsible for leading strategic planning, fundraising, reporting, and partner engagement. She brings experience in policy development and program management focused on vulnerable populations.
NBC Community Development Corporation
Wyandotte County, Kansas
With more 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, Broderick Crawford serves as the Executive Director of the NBC Community Development Corporation, the community arm of New Bethel Church. In this role Broderick manages over 22 projects and programs created and developed to improve health in Wyandotte County, Kansas. His experience includes roles as Community Health Director for NBC CDC; Supervisor of Ancillary Services for Saint Luke’s Internal Medicine and Clinic Supervisor for KU Infectious Diseases. Broderick serves on numerous community boards in Wyandotte County. He is also on several committees related to health research and serves as the President of the Missouri Prostate Coalition.
San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition
Alamosa County, Colorado
Liza Marron is the founding director of the San Luis Valley Local Foods Coalition in rural southern Colorado. Now in its fifth year of collaborative community work, the Coalition has stepped up to become its own non-profit, dedicated to creating a sustainable local foods system that is accessible and affordable to SLV families. She has been a community organizer with a focus on social justice, wellness and prevention for many years. Ms. Marron has a Master’s Degree in Community Counseling and a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish. Her skills set includes grant writing, visioning and strategic planning, non-profit management, coalition building, economic development and more.

YMCA of Greater Louisville
Jefferson County, Kentucky
Steve Tarver is the President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Louisville, which serves 240,000 people annually and has a budget of $59 million. Mr. Tarver grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and has been involved in the YMCA since age six. A graduate of Florida State University, he worked in YMCA program positions in Kentucky and Tennessee, and served as a YMCA Branch Executive in Nashville. Prior to Louisville, he served as the CEO of the YMCA of the Suncoast (Clearwater, Florida). Steve carried the Olympic Torch prior to the 1996 Games, and has received several awards and certifications in the field of health and wellness. He is a member of the Greater Louisville Inc. Board of Directors, Coalition for Louisville Youth and Louisville Health Advisory Board. With the YMCA of the USA, Steve serves on the Advisory Boards for Disadvantaged Youth and the Areas of Focus (Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility).
