Awards reflect Aetna’s commitment to holistic well-being

Aetna received the 2018Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles Award® PLATINUM from the National Business Group on Health (NBGH). This prestigious award recognizes the best workforce health and employee well-being programs in the nation, particularly those with a holistic approach encompassing physical, financial, emotional, social and community well-being.

Aetna was among 49 U.S. companies recognized, and among only 17 in the Platinum category reserved for organizations who have implemented a workforce well-being strategy with demonstrated results.

These awards come at a time when Aetna is leading a bold, new approach to employee well-being. “We are redefining what it means to be healthy, far beyond the conventional notion that health is the absence of illness,” said Kay Mooney, Vice President of Workforce Well-being and Inclusion. “We work tirelessly to understand the holistic needs of employees and provide programs and services that address all dimensions of their well-being.”

Aetna’s approach is backed by a five-year research partnership with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health to assess employee well-being across six dimensions: physical health, emotional health, financial security, social connectedness, purpose and character strengths. The study insights are used to enhance an already robust and engaging variety of well-being programs—including mindfulness, animal-assisted therapy, student loan repayment, enhanced benefits for low-income employees, preventive screening incentives, and well-being rewards and reimbursement.

As part of the awards program, Aetna also earned the Special Recognition for Financial Security award, with its Financial Well-being program singled out for its success in supporting the financial security of employees and their families. From basic budgeting and debt management to retirement and estate planning, the program has shown a marked improvement helping employees take a proactive approach to managing their financial well-being.

“We are very impressed with the innovation that all of the winning companies have demonstrated with their approaches to workforce well-being,” commented LuAnn Heinen, a vice president of the National Business Group on Health who has overseen the awards program since its inception. “The shift we are seeing from physical health and wellness programs to well-being as a workforce strategy is significant, and these companies are in the forefront.”

The honored employers were presented with the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles® award at NBGH’s Workforce Strategy 2018 Conference on September 25 in Atlanta, Ga. This is the 12th consecutive year Aetna has received the award.
