62 percent of Aetna and Coventry Medicare Advantage members are currently in plans rated 4 overall stars or higher
A 4.5 overall star-rated Aetna Medicare Advantage national PPO plan is offered in 47 states
HARTFORD, Conn. – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has awarded Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Coventry Health Care, an Aetna company, an average overall star rating of 4.04 across their Medicare Advantage plans for 2014, making the combined organization the highest-rated Medicare Advantage company among large publicly traded companies.

CMS’s Medicare Star Rating System ranks the performance and quality of Medicare plans to help beneficiaries and their families compare plans in their area. Star ratings are calculated each year using a scale of one to five stars (with five being the best) and may change from one year to the next, depending on how the plan performs.
Medicare health plans are rated on how well they perform on five different categories: members staying healthy, managing chronic conditions of members, member experience with the health plan, member complaints and health plan customer service. The 2014 ratings are the basis for revenue bonus payments in 2015.
Aetna’s Medicare Advantage national PPO plan, which includes the majority of Aetna’s employer-sponsored Medicare Advantage business, increased one full star to 4.5 overall stars in 2014.
Thirteen of Coventry’s 20 Medicare Advantage plans increased by at least half a star in their overall star rating, and two of the plans moved up by one full star, continuing the strong upward momentum from its 2013 star score performance.
Aetna and Coventry combined offer seven Medicare Advantage plans with a 4.5 overall star rating, and 17 plans with an overall rating of 4.0 stars or above.
