By the Numbers: Priorities in Making Health Care Decisions

Expanding access to high-quality, affordable care is a priority in communities nationwide. According to a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult and sponsored by CVS Health, the top three factors that determine where and how Americans choose to receive their care are: what is covered under their health plan, the overall quality of care and trust with the health provider.

Helping Patients Navigate their Health Benefits

With the increasing trend of enrollment in high-deductible health plans, patients are shouldering higher out-of-pocket costs for their care. Therefore, it’s important that patients know what is covered under their health plan so they are able to choose the highest quality care accessible to them. According to the Morning Consult survey, only one in five Americans consult a benefits specialist about the highest quality care available through their plan on a frequent basis.

At CVS Health, we’re committed to connecting patients to the best and most affordable care options available through their insurance.

  • Our real-time benefits program helps prescribers locate clinically appropriate medicines at the lowest cost available through a patient’s benefits plan. When provided with access to member-specific pharmacy benefit and formulary information through this program, prescribers are helping patients save $120 to $130 per filled prescription.

  • The survey also revealed that 64 percent of Americans say they would be interested in having access to a benefits specialist when visiting a health care facility. Through our recent integration with Aetna, we’ll be working to enhance interactions between patients and providers in our stores – allowing our pharmacists, nurse practitioners and other benefits experts to counsel patients and make sure they are doing the right thing for their health.

Expanding Access to High-Quality, Affordable Care

The survey revealed that three in four (75 percent) Americans believe that high-quality health care services are typically more expensive. At CVS Health, we’re committed to delivering affordable care while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

  • MinuteClinic was the first retail clinic to receive a Gold Seal of Approval from the Joint Commission in 2006 – and has received five consecutive accreditations since. Furthermore, most services at our 1,100 MinuteClinic locations cost approximately $100, as much as 90 percent less than a visit to an urgent care center or hospital emergency department.

  • Receiving quality care in the community is more accessible than many may realize. Our 30,000 pharmacists help patients manage their care in between doctor visits to ensure they remain adherent to their care plans and avoid adverse health events that result in costly hospitalizations.

Connecting Patients to Trusted Providers

When selecting a health care facility, 44 percent of Americans are willing to pay a higher price if the provider is highly trusted. At CVS Health, we recognize the importance of enabling real-time, high-quality interactions between patients and providers; however, it should not mean patients should have to pay more for that care.

  • Our pharmacists provide comprehensive medication support, helping to ensure that patients can afford their prescriptions and also take them as directed. In our 9,800 locations nationwide, our Rx Savings Finder tool enables our pharmacists to quickly and seamlessly review their prescription regimen, medication history and benefit plans to identify the lowest-cost, clinically appropriate medication available.

  • The 125 services available at our MinuteClinic locations are delivered by nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are compassionate, certified and accessible.
